Historical Note
You'd never guess it, but as you travel down Eggleston Avenue, you're driving over what used to be a canal that linked the Ohio River at Cincinnati to Lake Erie. The canal followed the path of what is now Central Parkway through downtown Cincinnati and finally through a series of ten or eleven locks, fell the last 110 feet to river level.
The canal through Cincinnati was covered over in the late 1920s but by then the locks at Eggleston had long been abandoned and converted into an underground sewer main because they weren't economical to operate. They silted up and required constant dredging. It was cheaper and faster to carry goods by wagon between the Ohio River and the top of the hill where the canal terminated.
